Zen Count is a balanced multi-level card counting system using four values: -2, -1, +1, and +2. Compared to Hi-Lo, Zen separately counts A as -1, letting ace depletion reflect directly in the RC, while giving the most favorable low cards (4–6) a stronger +2 signal.
Hi-Lo counts both A and 10 as -1, treating their removal equally, but aces contribute far more to blackjack value than regular 10s. Zen separates them — A counts as -1, while 10/J/Q/K count as -2 — allowing the remaining ace count to be partially read from the RC. This avoids the separate ace side count needed in Hi-Opt I, balancing accuracy and complexity.

True Count Conversion
Zen Count is a balanced system (RC returns to 0 after a full deck), using the same conversion as Hi-Lo: TC = RC / remaining decks. Because the count range extends from -2 to +2, RC fluctuates more than Hi-Lo, and TC values are proportionally larger.

Zen Count has more surrender deviations for 16 vs 9 and 16 vs A than Hi-Lo, because Zen counts A as -1 rather than -2. When aces are relatively abundant in the remaining deck, TC runs higher, allowing earlier recognition of dangerous dealer upcard combinations. Hi-Lo deviation indexes cannot be applied directly to Zen Count.
